Kurilian Bobtail Shorthair - KBS

General  

The Kurilian Bobtail is a robust cat with a short kinked tail, naturally occurring in the Kuril Islands.

Shape  

Top of head 

The head is large, in the shape of a moderate modified wedge, with gently rounded contours. The top of the head is flat.

Muzzle and chin 

The cheekbones are high and quite broad; the muzzle is medium in length and rather broad, with gently rounded contours and well-developed whisker pads. The chin is strong.

Profile  

The nose is medium in length and broad. The profile is slightly curved, the indentation being at the level of the inner corners of the eyes.

Eyes 

The eyes are medium to large in size, oval in shape, set wide apart and at a slight angle.

Ears 

The ears are rather large, broad and open at the base, with slightly rounded tips. They are set relatively high, at a very small angle and tilted slightly forward. The distance between the ears is not more than one ear width. Furnishings are desirable.

Body:

Size and boning 

Medium to large in size. The body is sturdy, compact and muscular.

Torso 

Quite broad chest. The spine is straight but the back may look slightly arched because of the raised rump. 

Neck 

Short and muscular. 

Legs and paws 

The legs are solid in boning, medium in length, the hind legs are slightly longer than the front legs, the paws are rounded.  

Tail 

The tail is kinked and/or curved, with one or more kinks in any combination.  
The length of the tail (without furnishing) is between 3 and 8 cm. 
The coat on the tail is slightly longer than on the rest of the body, which may give the impression of the pom-pom effect.

Texture  

The coat has slightly developed guard hairs, well-developed awn hair and light undercoat.  

Colour 

The colours not belonging to the original gene pool (chocolate, lilac, cinnamon, fawn, caramel, colourpointed, sepia and mink colours as well as their combinations with white) are not recognized. All other colours and patterns are recognized. Any amount of white is permitted.

Special breed faults 

Rounded or triangular head.
Too fine boning.
Too wooly coat.
Strong similarity to other bobtail breeds. 

 

Without certificates 

Tail of 8 to 12 cm length or shorter than 3 cm.
„Delayed bobtail” effect. 
Too arched back.
Head in shape of equilateral triangle with a small muzzle. 

 

Disqualify 

Total absence of tail vertebra.
Straight (not kinked / curved) tail.
Length of the tail more than 12 cm. 

 

Remarks 

Novices are only recognized as documented import from the Kuril Islands.

KBL. Cross-breeding with any other breed is not permitted.
